Surgical Laser

Surgical laser

Our clinic is equipped with surgical laser facilities which enable us to offer mass removal for horses. This is most commonly used for sarcoid and other skin neoplasias (such as melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma) and is carried out under standing sedation.

Laser excision is arguably the best method for removal of skin tumours in horses - with a significantly lower rate of recurrence compared to other methods. Using laser cutting alongside woundbed debridement allows our vets to give your horse the best chance against mass recurrence.

This procedure is only suitable to be carried out at our clinic. Depending on number and size of lesions it can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Following mass excision, there is a period of brief oozing and granulation (approx. 2 weeks) followed by a longer period of gradual scar formation (approx. 8 weeks); following this, the cosmetic appearance is generally very good.
